Thinky’s Guide to Nightlife in Singapore

If your guidebook is more than eight months old, throw it away, because Singapore is not what you think anymore…

Things are loosening up, bar-top dancing is back, late night bars are partying around the clock and the rainbow people are coming out of the closet and into the clubs!

Any night of the week you can find a deejay spinning, no matter your preference… and what about the ladies’ nights, which means in dozens of bars each week, women can drink for free! Beat that Toyko!

DXO Nightclub in Singapore

{xtypo_dropcap}S{/xtypo_dropcap}ure, there will always be the old standards, but over time any successful place with the right stuff will eventually be over-run by teenyboppers and punters who diminish what makes the place so great.

We need new venues because the tastes of patrons change, the geography and demographics change. People change. Singapore is no different.

Some venues come and go, some keep it going far longer than they should, yet I think that the resiliency of Singapore’s club scene is a really amazing thing, as it has only improved exponentially ever since the first house track bumped Rick Astley off the turntable.

Nude Supperclub + Bar

{xtypo_dropcap}W{/xtypo_dropcap}ith Zouk’s mega renovations and opening of the Ministry of Sound, every other club has been making touch-ups to prepare for the new players.

The re-launch of Nude into a restaurant and lounge, and supperclub and bar respectively was not a surprise, but in a mere 10 days, it’s certainly impressive.

Comfy chairs and pristine linen-covered tables, plus a wonderful ambient lighting make this place a great dining experience, with the funky neon lights that change colour.

balcony bar heeren{xtypo_dropcap}B{/xtypo_dropcap}ut the Balcony gives us aficionados something to satisfy our taste buds, and I’m not referring to the Yakiniku Rice Burgers either.

A great place to meet up with friends 24 hours a day, so there’s no need to try to jump the queue and charge up the Balcony to be the first to cast their ayes/no/maybe/ vote on the Balcony…. it’s all good.

Munk

{xtypo_dropcap}T{/xtypo_dropcap}he never-ending search for something bigger, brighter, better or maybe, just a unique place to sit back and unwind over the lure of an alcoholic beverage with friends as the week’s troubles ease away.

Who’s to know anyway? After a few rounds, I doubt anyone even cares. But the bottomline is, themed bars ARE the current rage. So, what’s out there?

Munk is a quaint little treasure chest along the well-known Circular road stretch, Boat Quay. The cosy, low-ceilinged bar, nestled on the second level of a typical Boat Quay shophouse seems to encompass you with a new perspective once its doors close behind you.

Loof

Loof singapore{xtypo_dropcap}W{/xtypo_dropcap}OOF WOOF! Check out the latest addition to our local chill out scene! The Loof (where the letter ‘L’ is an inverted ‘r’) is a rooftop bar at Odeon Towers that sounds like a poorly accented attempt to pronounce ‘Roof’.

Fusing a lush lounge concept and an open-air affair that boasts a great city skyline view, this rooftop-based offering exudes a cheeky-chic, sophisticated urban ambience.

Accompanied by the downbeat music that adjusts itself to the amount of people and ambient noise of the surroundings (great job, DJ!), The Loof is the ideal place to chase away rainy day blues.

The Rooftop Bar

rooftop bar singapore{xtypo_dropcap}I{/xtypo_dropcap}’m a bar-hopalic. That means that I’m never satisfied with just going to the same place, no matter how fantastic the place is.

After all, freshness is always appealing, in dates, in looks, and in bars. I can smell a new bar from miles away. But that might just be the paint, of course.

So when I discovered the gem that is Roof Bar had been open for months already, I was surprised.

My first thought was that this sounded like a place to bring my dog. My second thought was that I needed a new nose.

Chedi Bar

The CHEDI BAR{xtypo_dropcap}O{/xtypo_dropcap}ne lousy day after work, I was walking around Circular Road, trying to find a nice little bar to enjoy a drink when I noticed CHEDI BAR, a new bar along the stretch of karaoke-bar haven.

With my interest piqued by the name of the bar, I decided to do what most levelheaded professional women won’t – walk into a watering hole alone and sit myself along the bar.

Fortunately the crowd of yuppie executives in smart casuals working along the financial hub and your token expatriates were pretty much engrossed with their own parties thus no one batted an eyelid when I strutted in and sat myself at the bar.

Suba

{xtypo_dropcap}S{/xtypo_dropcap}o this way, I get to keep my money and save it for shopping, and I still get plied with alcohol. At any rate, Suba’s opening was certainly packed. Full of people, and drinks.

Situated right opposite the entrance of Millenia Tower, it’s obvious which demographic it seeks to cater to.

Well, there were plenty of suits and executives, men and women, who dropped by for a relaxer after work, so clearly it’s marketing strategy is working.

While the dark and sexy interior decor has been done to death, Suba manages to bring it off with a certain class.

absinthe bar singapore{xtypo_dropcap}T{/xtypo_dropcap}he Absinthe Bar is a shop house bar with an open-air terrace aimed to attract a laid back crowd enjoying world music.

You might have heard of this unique place, (or perhaps you’re a member of Expat Singapore’s WNDC and have been there already?), but if you haven’t been to this groovy little bar, you don’t know what you’re missing.

The inside is adorned with matte gold ceiling fans, tall palm trees and Moroccan lamps, surrounded by day beds and lounge sofas along the open shutter windows that are typical of shop houses. With tall white walls, the bar has attracted many galleries to hang their paintings.

Equinox bar

{xtypo_dropcap}O{/xtypo_dropcap}n any given night of the week, you’ll likely find the staff of Think lounging with the ladies and sipping Lichee Martinis and Long Island Ice teas at the New Asia Bar, getting high atop the highest hotel in Southeast Asia.

For those of you who don’t know, Equinox is a luxurious and intimate two storey lounge with a club-like atmosphere, sitting decadently atop the Swissôtel Stamford, and in my opinion, is one of the greatest watering holes of the world.

{xtypo_dropcap}Y{/xtypo_dropcap}ou can’t swing a dead cat down on Circular Road, without that cat ending up in few cool (and not so cool) bars. But you don’t have to be a dead cat to know that there’s one bar there that really stands out.

That bar is called RAV, and it has been spicing up the local music scene with a great mix of performances and people in a way cool interior.

RAV has been attracting a good mix of trendy club-goers and fashion conscious business types from the CBD.Booze and public performance have a long history, from absinthe in the Moulin Rouge, to cheap Russian Vodka and the cabaret in ’30s Berlin, to Martell and the KTV lounges here in Singapore.
