A banner over one of the many constructions sites that hover around Andel proclaims it will be "the new downtown", hmmm...

N
o doubt developers have big plans for the area leading from this metro station down to the riverfront. A friend tipped me off to a bar that will likely be one of the many that get swallowed up in the giant wave of gentrification that is soon to come.

Jamajka is a small pub that wafts out lazy clouds of cigarette smoke on to a street that is lined with buildings covered with ages of soot.

A mixed-age, working-class crowd swill Postrizinske Pivo, the only place to get this beer in Prague, for 13.80 kc.

Sitting on the wooden benches and inhaling the potentially noxious combination of cigarettes, body odor and pivo, I couldn't help but wonder when this endangered species-beer will give way to Martinis; utopenec and marinated hermelin to California cuisine or sushi.

A very faded picture of a Victorian damsel caught my eye through the haze of the bar, soon to be consigned to an attic or a trash bin, a casualty of progress.
