"If you don't drink in the morning, you can't be drunk all day."
T his month started with a trip to Europe, or as near as my pockets would allow. I have for quite sometime now, been hankering for some good old European food. When I was asked to go to 'Brasserie Wolf' for lunch.
It sounded like a name for a German eaterie, but I could not be more wrong. The inside decor looked and felt like it was from Paris, well after all it is a Parisian style Brasserie.
I find out later on during the meal that Brasserie Wolf is, the only true brasserie in Singapore. The food is exquisite, fine dining at its' best in every sense of the word. I do urge to find this place and sample the work of Chef Philippe Nouzillat. (Watch out for more on this Super Chef in the year ahead). Food...then drinks.
As we all know by now, Clarke Quay is completed with all the outlets being fully occupied, and WOW! the new outlets are a credit to the area, the complement the existing venues, as well as add a new flair on the range of venues available to us. I felt a strong air of rejuvenation as I walked around, new bars, clubs, restaurants and much more.
Where to go first? King Satay was a great place to contemplate my evening bar crawl. So after a hearty meal of more satay than a hungry person should eat, it was off to explore. Scotland ahoy. Highlander was my next stop, just for a wee dram.
With some of the best whiskey to come down from the Highlands or up from the Lowlands, you'll find a warming tipple for even the connoisseur among you.
With names like; Auchentoshan, a Lowland Single Malt; Tamdhu or Little Dark Hill in Gaelic is from the Speyside area; Clynelish from the Brora area of the Highlands; Bunnahabhain is a Full Flavoured Single Islay Malt Whiskey, (a favourite of mine), and not forgetting that little area in the South West Area of Scotland, just outside of Stirling, Springbank is a unique whiskey from the Campbeltown District.
All with their own uniqueness, as well as flavour and taste this is the place you'll want to be. Okay, after a dram or several, it was time for a ramble...
Off to India. Ivory the Indian Kitchen boasts a love story with food. With many different types from all over the great continent, you won't just be stuck with the usual fare of your local Tandoorie around the corner, or on the end of the telephone, but this is true Indian Cuisine at its' best.
With tastes and aromas from the Costal regions, this is a type of Indian food that you don't normally get from your local curry house. (Well worth a try).
From India and on to the Road to Marrakesh. After a meal in this away from the main drag, with all the hustle and bustle of the new Clarke Quay behind you, and the watery sounds of a fountain, this relaxing restaurant will delight you.
Low slung chairs, authentic cuisine from North Africa, you can get that shish kebab you crave, or that shisha that smells so good. Clarke Quay to Boat Quay.
Bored of the spankin' new joints in CQ, I headed off to familiar surroundings. Whilst it is always good to visit new places, one gets to like the old familiar sights, sounds and faces of places where you feel familiar, to coin the words from a song, we all like to go 'Where everyone knows our name'. Hip Hop anyone?
Hip Hop has that vibe where everyone wants to hide, but has to be seen. Bumble Beez on BQ gives exactly that option. With a long bar as you enter, you can very easily glide into the dance room, slide in to the VIP area and just chill to some hip grooves that you will want to move to.
Drinks are NOT on the pricey side, with beer a paltry $10, and Cindy, the Tequila girl, will ply you all night long Jose Cuervo for only $5 a shot. Watch out for the bar top dancers...
BQ Bar is always a welcome stop. With many an old face, as well as new ones, it is a place to meet some good people. Don't expect a quiet drink here, a very jovial place, just the place to start an evening of revelry, whatever the event.
Harry's at Boat Quay is a place to savour. With the dulcet tones of Sugar Mama, and the resident house band Chromazone the sounds of Jazz will easily let work stresses slip on by. Enjoy some of the finest whiskeys, and great food only at Harry's. The next place will always get my stamp of approval.
The Penny Blac is a place to get that feel of home. With an original red pillar-box right in the middle of the floor, you get a feel of London here. Life at the Penny Black is a little like 'same-same'.
It just goes on without a care in the world. A little change here a little change there, new faces running the bar and old faces being served, it is just like your local back home. Mine anyways.
Beer is liquid-liquid is fluid, off to Far East Square and Fluid Bar & Lounge next. Some more sultry Jazz sounds with deejays as well, you certainly get a varied entertainment schedule, great drink offers and fantastic food, you get all the best things in life with a little fluidity.
This month also saw the holiday period take hold. With many a party going on, and to many drinks to be drunk, parties to mention: Uncabunca, Jugs Margarita Bar, The Cavern, Beers, The White Room, EskiBar, Flo, 1NiteStand, BB's, Attica, and many many more, this month certainly was lush!!! Happy New Year to all of you, wherever you come from, wherever you drink.
Lets make this year a year of peace. It is a troubled world we live in right now, let us look towards peace for the year ahead, and make this a year to bring humanity together. God bless you, one and all.
Yet again it was certainly another lush life this past month, with parties a many, friends a new and many new and some regular places visited.
Send me a listing of a venue you think we don't know about, and we may pay it a visit. If we do and we meet you there, we buy the first drink. Send to
