Do you often wonder whether you should sleep on a hard surface or a soft one? Don’t fret about it since a lot of people have this same confusion. In this article, I’ll tell you on what kind of surface you should sleep on. So, let’s get started with this.

How important body alignment is while sleeping?

A poor body alignment and a wrong mattress can bereave you of a nice, restorative, and deep sleep. By sleeping in the right position and using a proper mattress, you can improve your sleep quality as well as your sleep quantity. Additionally, when you go to sleep, you shouldn’t drink coffee or any energy drink at least 3 hours before you go to bed as they can interfere with your sleep routine.

Your body should be aligned while you sleep. This means you can sleep in any posture in which you feel comfortable. However, in this case, there are two issues. One is that the sleep position in which you feel comfortable would not let your body to realign. And, the second issue is that the misalignment can cause several health problems later on.

Nevertheless, misalignment of your body can worsen or cause back ache as well as affect the quantity and quality of your sleep. And, thus poor sleep quality or sleep deprivation can impact your psychological and physical health negatively.

Hard mattress or soft mattress – which one is better?

Some people say that a hard mattress should be your choice over a soft mattress. However, some people say the opposite, that a soft mattress is better. And, a few say that the mattress type in which you are comfortable should be your go-to choice.

In a mattress, its firmness is not just important, but also its ability to provide support to the correct body parts in the right way. A proper alignment is important to prevent the turning and tossing of the body while sleeping, which disrupts your sleep. Nevertheless, no matter what type of mattress you choose, make sure you cover it with the best mattress topper to experience the best results.

Hard mattress

It is said that if a mattress has less cushioning, then it can facilitate or support a neutral-spine position while sleeping. The ergonomics of sleep dictate that bones should have some resistance so that the person can get a nice sleep.

A hard bed that has a hard and thin mattress on it allows your bones to bear most of the pressure. As a result, your veins and arteries relax and your muscles are freed, thus improving your blood circulation and enhancing your sleep.

Soft mattress

A recent Spanish study reports that a soft mattress is advantageous for people who have back issues, contrary to the ancient belief that back problems can be cured by sleeping on hard surfaces. However, in this study, 313 participants suffering from back ache took part, wherein the participants were segregated into two groups.

The first group slept on a firm mattress and the other group slept on a medium-firm mattress. This study was conducted over a span of 90 days. The participants were checked before the beginning of the study and at the end of it. The participants reported that their condition has improved after the study was finished. However, the ones that slept on a medium-firm mattress said that they have found more relief.

Thus, while sleeping you need to maintain the right body alignment so that you can get a deep night’s sleep. The mattress you sleep on affects the alignment of your body, which influences your sleep quality. It is not that a firm mattress is good, but the answer is the material from which the mattress is made of should be taken care of since it can distribute your weight evenly.
